ABOUT THE MATHS WINTER SCHOOL

Our Matric Winter School is a comprehensive three week course run during the school holidays. It covers the entire Matric Maths Syllabus.

The first two weeks of the course covers all the material for term one and two. This is an opportunity to revise what you've already learned and then fill in the gaps. The third week will be for going over past papers. We will prepare you for questions and what to expect in the final exams. We will also teach you exam tips and techniques.

Our goal is to help you achieve your best results! If you would like to book please fill in the form below. Space is limited.

COURSE DIRECTOR

The course will be taught has been developed by Nick Hiltermann (BSc UCT, BComm Wits). Nick is a highly qualified and experienced maths teacher who has taught learners from Grade 5 to Matric maths. He has also lectured University level mathematics, Cambridge AS and A levels, IB (American Syllabus) as well as specialized aeronautical Mathematics to Engineers at Base 4 in Cape Town.

COURSES OUTLINE

Week 1

Day 1 - Number Sequences and Series

In this lesson on Sequences and Series we focus on quadratic sequences, arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences and infinite series.

Day 2 - Functions I

In this lesson we discuss the definition of a function. The distinction between a function and a relation is given. The test for a function is given. Mapping is used to show that some relations are not functions.

Day 3 - Functions II (as well as revision of log and exponents)

In this lesson we define an inverse and discuss how we get the equation of an inverse given the equation of the original function. In addition we integrate inverses with reflection in the line y=x. We deal with logarithmic and exponential functions.

Day 4 - Financial Maths

In this lesson we give a brief description of what future value investment or annuities are and the derivation of the future value formula from the sum of the geometric formula.

We look at how to determine the Balance Outstanding on a loan after making a certain number of payments.

Day 5 - Trigonometry

We will go through the general solution of trigonometric equations and trigonometric identities.

We look at how the Compound Angle Identity is proved, and other identities derived from it. They are used in simplifying trigonometric equations.

Week 2

Day 6 - Calculus

We discuss derivatives and how to use them when graphing and interpreting functions.

Day 7 - Functions III

In this lesson we go through the stages of drawing the graph of a third degree function step by step. We explore rates of change.

Day 8 - Revision of first seven days.

This is where we should be up-to-date having covered everything that needed to be done to write June exams. The following two days will be new work if there school is accurately following the nationals syllabus.

Day 9 - Euclidian Geometry

Day 10 - Statistics, Probability & Data Handling

Week 3

Day 11 & 12 Exam Preparation - Paper 1

Day 13 & 14 Exam Preparation - Paper 2
